Safe Kids This Season: Pediatricians Share Toy Safety Tips

As families begin holiday shopping and gift-giving, Coastal Family Health Center is raising awareness for National Safe Toys & Gifts Month, reminding the community to choose age-appropriate, safe, and well-constructed toys for children of all ages.

Each year, thousands of children are treated for toy-related injuries, many of which are preventable. Coastal’s pediatric team encourages families to take a few simple precautions to keep the season joyful and safe.

“Parents and caregivers should always check the age recommendations on toys before purchasing,” said Dr. Mollie Winter, Pediatrician at Coastal Family Health Center. “Younger children can be especially vulnerable to small parts, sharp edges, and toys that are not designed for their developmental stage. The right toy not only brings joy but also protects your child’s well-being.”

Common hazards include choking risks, button batteries, loose magnets, and toys with long strings or cords. Battery-powered toys require special attention. Button batteries in particular can cause severe internal injury if swallowed.

“Battery safety cannot be emphasized enough,” said Dr. Shama Shakir, Pediatrician. “Make sure battery compartments are secured with screws and keep spare or used batteries out of reach. A few extra seconds of precaution can prevent a life-threatening emergency.”

Coastal Family Health Center recommends the following safety tips during National Safe Toys & Gifts Month:

  • Choose age-appropriate toys based on the child’s developmental level.
  • Avoid small parts for children under age three to reduce choking risks (even older depending on the child).
  • Inspect toys for durability, avoiding items that can easily break or splinter.
  • Check battery compartments for secure closures; keep loose batteries stored safely.
  • Select toys made of non-toxic materials and avoid items with sharp edges.
  • Supervise playtime, especially when introducing a new toy.
  • Read labels and instructions to understand safety features and proper use.

Coastal Family Health Center encourages families to use this month as an opportunity to refresh their toy safety habits and ensure the holiday season remains both festive and safe.
