Men’s Health: The Problem with “I’m Fine”

By: Hoyt Williamson, APRN, FNP-BC

For many men, health problems do not begin with a major diagnosis. They begin quietly.

A little more fatigue than usual.
Trouble sleeping.
Constant stress.
Skipping meals during workdays.
Feeling “off,” but pushing through it anyway.

Men are often taught to power through discomfort, stay productive, and avoid slowing down. But ignoring small warning signs can allow manageable health concerns to become serious long-term conditions.

This Men’s Health Month, instead of focusing only on generic reminders to “eat healthy and exercise,” it is worth talking about something that affects millions of men every day but often goes unspoken: preventive health and stress-related health decline.

According to the CDC, men are less likely than women to seek preventive medical care, yet they face higher rates of heart disease, high blood pressure, and many preventable chronic illnesses.

Stress Affects Your Body

Long-term stress can impact nearly every system in the body. Over time, chronic stress may contribute to:

  • High blood pressure
  • Sleep problems
  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Increased risk for heart disease
  • Digestive issues
  • Poor immune function

Many men normalize these symptoms because they are busy balancing careers, finances, parenting, caregiving, and daily responsibilities. But “used to it” does not always mean healthy.

In fact, heart disease remains the leading cause of death for men in the United States. Many of the biggest risk factors, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol, can develop silently without noticeable symptoms.

The Problem with Waiting Until Something Feels Serious

One of the biggest misconceptions about healthcare is that you only need to see a provider when something is clearly wrong.

Preventive care works differently.

Annual wellness visits help catch concerns early before they become emergencies, hospital stays, or life-changing diagnoses. Conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol are often manageable when identified early.

A yearly checkup can provide:

  • Blood pressure and cholesterol screening
  • Diabetes screening
  • Mental health support
  • Sleep and fatigue discussions
  • Preventive cancer screenings
  • Guidance on weight, nutrition, and exercise
  • A chance to ask questions men often put off for years

Sometimes the most important part of a wellness visit is simply having a conversation about symptoms you have been ignoring.

Health Is Not Just About You

For many men, motivation comes from the people around them.

Your health affects your ability to:

  • Be present with your children and family
  • Continue doing the work you care about
  • Enjoy hobbies and activities you love
  • Stay active and independent as you age
  • Show up for the people who depend on you

Preventive care is not about perfection. It is about staying healthy enough to keep living fully.
