With Valentine’s Day approaching, dentists are encouraging parents to be mindful of how increased candy and chocolate consumption can affect children’s dental health. While sweet treats are part of many holiday celebrations, maintaining healthy habits before, during, and after Valentine’s Day can help prevent cavities and promote lifelong oral health.
Nutrition plays a significant role in dental health, especially for children. Frequent sugary snacks and drinks increase the risk of tooth decay by weakening enamel over time. Dentists recommend limiting candy intake, encouraging water as the primary beverage, and choosing tooth-friendly foods such as fruits, vegetables, and dairy products to help protect developing teeth.
“Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity for parents to talk with their children about balance,” said Clarke M. Allen, DDS, Director of Dental Services at Coastal Family Health Center. “Enjoying treats in moderation, especially during meals, and following up with good oral hygiene can help reduce the impact of sugar on young teeth.”
Good dental habits at home remain essential. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once daily helps remove plaque that causes cavities. Because young children often lack the coordination to brush thoroughly, parents are encouraged to assist or supervise brushing until around age 7 or 8.
Dentists also emphasize the importance of making dental visits a positive experience. Regular checkups help children become comfortable with the dentist, build trust, and reinforce healthy routines that can last into adulthood.
By combining smart nutrition choices, consistent oral hygiene, and routine dental care, families can enjoy Valentine’s Day while keeping children’s smiles healthy all year long.
